Hello and welcome to the all new and improved Greywire home page. Just what were you thinking, anyway?
WinUAE 0.8.8 Release 8Get the latest version of the Amiga emulator and source code (it really compiles now!). WinUAE Binary, WinUAE Source code Blurg: 10/13/1999Happy birthday to me! Well, not really, because I feel positively old now... don't ask. Interface Hall of ShameEver used a program with a GUI that just drove you crazy? Well nominate it to the Hall of Shame! And if you're a programmer, go here and see how NOT to do it! Hall of ShameMappers vs PackersNo, it's not a football game. It's about how people think; in particular how computer programmers think, but much more generally the difference between creative folk and the strict by-the-book business types. Great read (if you are a creative person, otherwise you might be offended and not know why...). Check out the Programmer's Stone. Part of the OS, huh?Microsoft claimed that Internet Explorer was (and had a right to be) a part of the Windows OS - inseparable, integrated, and a boon to every man woman and child on earth. Well, somebody has figured out a way to throw another pie in Microsoft's face - a simple, small program that removes IE from Windows 98 - completely. And guess what? Without IE you can cut the typical Windows installation size almost in half, and increase the speed of your system by a noticeable amount. Why didn't MS give this kind of option to the users? When 95 came out, there was still the option to use the old Windows 3.1 interface. Why then with 98 were we *forced* to have IE built into everything? Granted, I like IE in some ways. I use it. But I don't see the need for it to be used in every desktop folder I open (try looking at how much memory a single window takes when it opens). It just doesn't add that much usefulness for the amount of overhead it incurs. Check out 98lite at http://www.98lite.net RamblingsWell, I did it! I mounted my old Amiga hard drive under Linux! And all I had to do was recompile the Linux kernel with CONFIG_AFFS_FS set. Pretty amazing, that one can recompile the core of a complex OS with no experience and have it work. I'm still looking for just the right format for this site. I am leaning towards a now popular format where you just add new things and move everything else down, eventually removing things off the bottom. This way, I can put in my random thoughts on an annoying day to day basis! Well let me tell you what I've been thinking. Windows really sucks. Mac OS sucks. Linux seems to be the only viable alternative. But Amiga OS was and is the only OS that I really liked. So what's with that silly penguin up there? I've just recently installed SuSE Linux It remains to be seen how well the two included options for running Windows apps work. If they work reasonably well I may be able to switch to Linux full time (rather than as a curiosity and development tool). It also remains to be seen (IE I haven't tried to run it yet) how well the Linux UAE works. I'm not sure if it has all the features of WinUAE (I know it doesn't have the fancy GUI, but who cares... I could write such a thing). I rather like that Linux can (in theory) read Amiga formatted drives directly, which means I should be able to put my old Amiga drive into the PC and read it. Maybe even boot UAE from it. Then I can program again on a decent OS! Random stuff Since you are here, you might as well read my latest thoughts about the Amiga's Future . Or maybe you'd like to know what my idea of the Ultimate Operating System is. Or perhaps you wanted to read a bunch of vapor nonsense about my latest project to be, Portable Binaries for Amiga ? Read some of the other stuff that inspired me and maybe you won't think I'm that crazy! Maybe you were looking for an all around handyman? Read my Resume and hire me now! Oh, I get it... you must be a MORON! |
